Saubiya Chasmawala’s artistic discourse on identity stems from being a modern Alavi Bohra Muslim woman, and her need to break away from the norms that entails. Her visual language deals with the notion of time and its passage, and how it equally erodes at the sacred and mundane. Saubiya’s work is informed by the Islamic idea of aniconism, and a literary tradition that emphasizes recitation over comprehension. She has a BVA and a Gold Medal in MVA in Painting from the Maharaja Sayajirao University, Vadodara. In 2016, her works were part of In Letter and Spirit at Tarq Gallery, Mumbai, and Perspecta at Galerie 88, Kolkata; previously she has been part of Reading Room at the Winchester School of Art, UK. She was awarded the Nasreen Mohamedi Scholarship in her third year of BVA, and the Inlaks Fine Art award in 2016.
