Sohini Sengupta | India
Sohini is a Jadhavpur based artist who, through her artwork, tries to connect to the world outside. Her estrangement from the form of dance led her to a struggle to find a new language of articulation. In her art, there is a strong sense of movement and touch, where she deals with issues of pain and discomfort. Visual language has allowed her to articulate the personal in the political, like the ones inspired by Hokkolorob, a movement which started in the Jadhavpur University Campus, or the ones influenced by the violence in Kashmir. Women play a strong role in Sohini’s work where they are not merely objects but acquire a prominence, assertive yet subtle.
